Getting the Right Tools
for your Big Move
Back to Real Estate Learning Center
One of the most overlooked aspects of moving from one
apartment to another is having the right tools to finish
the job. While people find their apartment, pack up
their possessions, and get their change of address forms
in order, they often forget that they need certain tools
to take apart larger items and reassemble when they move
into their new apartment. People on the move don’t need
to worry about purchasing an expensive tool set or
overspend on a variety of tools used specifically in the
moving process. Often, moving tools and materials can be
purchased from truck rental companies or borrowed from
friends and family who move often. Finding the right
tools for the job comes down to thinking about what is
common among household items and the most pressing needs
upon moving in.
The essential tool for any renter moving a large amount
of appliances, furniture, and boxes is the hand truck or
hand cart. Hand trucks are available for rental through
truck rental companies, moving companies, or can be
found at most retailers. Most people should have access
to a hand truck through a friend, relative, or close
family member. Hand trucks are necessary to save movers
possible back injuries while keeping boxes and other big
items safe from risk of dropping. Renters should load
two larger boxes or up to three small boxes on the
average hand truck to make the most out of each trip
while avoiding overloading. Hand trucks can carry
awkward consumer electronics like television sets or
entertainment centers that are difficult for one person
to carry. Any good mover should have a hand truck or two
available to make the moving process a whole lot easier.
For any mover, having a basic tool set is key to moving
most items from one apartment to another. In order to
take apart wooden or metal bed frames, an adjustable
wrench is necessary to remove bolts and replace them at
the new apartment. A variety of screwdrivers, both
Phillips head and flat head, are needed for various
furniture items that should be removed in order to
facilitate easier movement and storage between
apartments. Hammers and nails are necessary to place
shelving, pictures, and other items on walls in the new
apartment. A complete tool set can be purchased from
most retailers for a relatively low price. As well,
individual tools can be purchased from retailers in
order to save money and space in the tool box.
People moving from an old apartment to a new apartment
need an abundance of boxes and packing tape in order to
successfully move all of their possession. Sturdy
cardboard boxes, durable wooden crates, and reliable
plastic containers can all contribute to a smooth move
into a new residence. Boxes are probably the most common
storage item used by movers because they are inexpensive
and durable enough to contain any number of household
items. Movers can purchase boxes from office supply
stores or moving companies and can usually ask local
grocers or retailers for boxes for a small fee. Durable
packing tape is necessary to build boxes and close them
up in order to protect household items from damage from
moving.
Some final items necessary for a good apartment move is
paints and poster putties. During a move, there are
inevitable scuffs and damage marks to the paint of the
old apartment. Renters can find a matching paint to
cover scuff marks on a small scale. As well, poster
putty can be used to fix nail holes or any small gouges
in the walls of the old apartment. These items can help
movers earn back a bigger share of their security
deposit.
