Finding Creative Uses For Your New Apartment’s Additional Space

In the process of finding a new apartment, many people overestimate their need for space in their new living accommodations. For example, some people fall in love with a two-bedroom apartment when they really only need a studio or one bedroom because they feel they need extra storage space. While it is tempting just to use this empty space for storing old boxes or household items that are rarely used, renters should understand that everyone within the apartment is accessible by visitors and guests. As such, renters should utilize their new apartment’s extra space to fill work or entertainment needs rather than simple storage. Many apartment buildings come with a storage locker included in the rent to help out their tenants.

Second or additional bedrooms not used for sleeping and relaxing should be turned into something functional for renters and their guests. This extra space can be used as a guest bedroom if family and friends are around on a regular basis. With a convertible sofa and some basic amenities, renters can make their overnight guests feel at home.

However, renters can make the second bedroom a part of their everyday life. Musicians, painters, and other artists can use the extra space for an art studio, complete with a drawing table and space for various works. Freelance writers and renters who are working on their first novel can utilize the second bedroom as an office. A cheap office desk, comfortable chair, and a desktop computer can make this bedroom into the perfect writer’s getaway. For renters looking to get a quick workout in during their busy day, an additional bedroom can become a workout room with weights and cardiovascular machines. As well, new apartment tenants can build a pet sanctuary for their dogs, cats, or birds from this unused space. Before undertaking any of these suggestions, renters should consult their lease and their apartment’s rental office.

In many larger apartments, renters will find that they use their kitchen as a dining room. This leaves the built-in dining room area without a specific purpose or furnishings. In the same way as a second bedroom, the dining room can be used for a variety of creative purposes. Renters who have a green thumb may enjoy the extra dining room space to set up their seasonal plants or a miniature garden. For apartment residents who have no space built in for studying or work, the extra dining room space can be used to hold a desk. This small study area allows parents to keep an eye on their children while getting some work done from home. Finally, the most appropriate use for extra dining room space is as a pantry or a serving area for guests. Party platters, drinks, and snacks can be stored in easy to reach places for guests and family members.

The final places that new apartment renters will want to consider using for creative purposes are additional closet areas. Many apartment buildings feature walk-in closets standard with their most basic apartments. While renters will surely try their best to fill the closet’s ample space with clothes and other goodies, there are a number of ways to use this space to great effect. Renters can place a mini Zen garden in their walk-in closet to get away from the stress of work for a few minutes. A comfortable reclining chair or sleeping bag can turn a walk-in closet for a great place to take a quick cat nap away from roommates. Finally, walk-in closets can be used as a space to organize your clothing into daily outfits. Laying out clothes for the week or figuring out a creative clothing approach for a dinner party are great ways to use the extra closet space.
